The Tagakaulo are one of the Indigenous Peoples of southern Mindanao, and their history, traditions, and way of life have been carefully preserved through generations.

Their culture is deeply rooted in family, respect for elders, communal responsibility, and a profound relationship with the land they call home. Their traditions, stories, language, music, and customs continue to express a rich cultural identity that deserves to be cherished and respected.

As a mission rooted in inculturation, we do not see these traditions as obstacles to faith but as gifts through which God's grace is already at work — gifts that shape how we understand and live the Gospel, not just how we present it.

A People Rooted in Community Tradition

Window into Tagakaulo Worldview

Kolu names the land, the plants and animals, the water and air, the people, the ancestors, and the spirits who dwell there, together with the history, stories, beliefs, traditions, and music that bind them all together. It is the dynamic relationship among all these things—not any one part alone—that the Tagakolu people call kolu. To understand this word is to begin to understand why protecting their ancestral domain is inseparable from protecting their very identity.

The name Tagakaulo is commonly understood to mean "people of the headwaters" or "people living in the uplands," reflecting the community's deep connection to the mountains and river systems of southern Mindanao. This connection to the land continues to shape their identity, traditions, and way of life.
